The Gray-collared Chipmunk is named for the gray band across its neck and chest that distinguishes it from similar species in the same mountain habitat. It is found in montane forests of Arizona, New Mexico, and adjacent Mexico at middle to high elevations. Like other chipmunks, it stores seeds in underground caches to use during winter torpor.
