Illustration of Eastern Fisher (Pekania pennanti)

The Fisher was largely extirpated from the northeastern United States by the early 20th century due to trapping and forest clearing, but has recovered substantially through natural recolonization and reintroduction programs. It is a large, dark mustelid with a pointed face and short legs. Fishers are the primary specialist predators of porcupines in northeastern forests, attacking the face in repeated passes.
