The Mexican Spiny Pocket Mouse is a heteromyid with mixed spiny and soft pelage on its back, using external fur-lined cheek pouches to transport seeds to underground stores. It reaches the southern tip of Texas as the northern extent of its range in North America. Spiny pocket mice are found in brushy habitats and tropical thornscrub where they provide important seed-dispersal services.
