The Mexican Spiny Pocket Mouse is the most widespread Heteromys in Mexico, found across the Pacific and Gulf slopes in tropical forests and highland edges. It has mixed spiny and soft fur on the back and fur-lined external cheek pouches used for seed transport. A solitary, nocturnal seed-cacher, it plays an important role in seed dispersal in Mexican tropical forests.
