The Autumn Meadowhawk is a small, red dragonfly that is one of the last species flying in late fall across eastern North America, sometimes persisting into November. Males become deep blood-red while females and immatures are yellow-brown. It is frequently found far from water, perching in fields and sunny roadsides while hunting small insects.
