The Southern Spotted Skunk is a recently described species separated from the Western Spotted Skunk based on genetic analysis, occupying the southern portion of what was once considered a single species' range in Mexico and Central America. It performs the same characteristic handstand warning display before spraying as its relatives. Its broken white stripe pattern makes it one of the most visually striking skunks in North America.
