The Dusky Shrew is a widespread mountain shrew of western North America that occupies a broad range of moist habitats from low-elevation riparian areas to subalpine meadows. It is nearly identical to the vagrant shrew and the two species were long treated as one. Dusky shrews are vital components of forest floor food webs, consuming large numbers of soil invertebrates.
