The Common Eider is the largest duck in the Northern Hemisphere and the source of 'eiderdown' — the insulating breast feathers females pluck to line their nests. Males are spectacularly patterned in black and white with a green nape. The massive sloping bill profile is distinctive. It winters in large rafts on rocky coastlines.
