Illustration of Prairie Warbler (Setophaga discolor)

The Prairie Warbler frequents old fields, scrubby pine barrens, and mangroves — rarely open prairie — and is named for a habitat type that no longer means what it once did. The male has a bright yellow face marked with black, chestnut streaks on the back, and a tail-wagging habit that distinguishes it. Its ascending scale of buzzy notes is a characteristic sound of shrubby successional habitats.
