The Prairie Mole is a pale subspecies of Eastern Mole adapted to the deep loam soils of the Great Plains, where it tunnels through grassland in search of earthworms and grubs. It creates an extensive network of deep permanent tunnels and shallow feeding runways visible as low ridges in lawns and pastures. The prairie mole's extensive burrowing aerates compacted soils and contributes to soil fertility.
