Illustration of Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana)

The Pronghorn is the fastest land animal in the Western Hemisphere, capable of sustained speeds exceeding 55 mph. It is the sole living member of the family Antilocapridae and sheds its horn sheaths annually, unlike any other horned mammal. Its large windpipe and oversized lungs provide the aerobic capacity needed for high-speed endurance running.
