Allegheny Blackberry is one of the most important fruit-bearing shrubs in eastern North America, with thorny arching canes producing large, sweet blackberries in July. It colonizes forest gaps, clearcuts, and disturbed areas, providing both food and cover for wildlife. Over 60 species of birds and mammals consume the berries, and the dense canes shelter many ground-nesting birds.
