American Basswood is a large tree of rich, moist eastern forests that produces intensely fragrant clusters of cream-colored flowers in late June, filling entire woodlands with their sweet, honey-like scent. Bees produce a prized, distinctive light honey from the flowers. The inner bark (bast) was used extensively by indigenous peoples for rope and mats.
