The European Ground Beetle is a large, glossy black ground beetle introduced from Europe that is now one of the most abundant beetles in North American agricultural soils. Despite being an introduced species, it is generally considered beneficial because it voraciously consumes weed seeds and small pest insects. It is nocturnal and found under rocks, debris, and in dense vegetation.
