The European Hornet is the only true hornet established in North America, introduced in the 1800s and now widespread in the East. It is large, reaching nearly 1.5 inches, with yellow-and-reddish-brown patterning. Unlike yellowjackets it is less aggressive unless directly provoked or the nest is threatened. Colonies nest in hollow trees, attics, and wall voids.
