Chokecherry is a shrub or small tree producing large clusters of astringent dark red to black cherries that pucker the mouth when eaten raw but make excellent jelly and wine. It is one of the most widely distributed native fruiting shrubs in North America, found from coast to coast. Over 50 bird species consume the berries, and it was an important food source for indigenous peoples.
