Illustration of Claret Cup Cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus)

Claret Cup Cactus forms large mounding clusters of cylindrical stems crowned in spring with brilliant scarlet flowers that blaze against desert rocks. It has one of the widest elevation ranges of any cactus, growing from low desert scrub to high-elevation pinyon-juniper woodland and even ponderosa pine forest. The brilliant red, tubular flowers are almost exclusively pollinated by hummingbirds, particularly black-chinned and broad-tailed hummingbirds. It is one of the first desert flowers to bloom in spring, providing a critical nectar resource for northbound migrating hummingbirds.

Habitat
Rocky slopes, canyon walls, and open scrub from desert elevations to ponderosa pine forest across the Southwest.
Diet
Red tubular flowers pollinated almost exclusively by hummingbirds; fruits edible and consumed by various desert animals.
