Illustration of American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber)

The American Flamingo is a native species that historically bred in Florida and now occasionally appears from the Caribbean, particularly after tropical storms. Its vivid pink plumage comes from carotenoid pigments in the algae and crustaceans it filters from water with its bent, sieve-like bill. A small breeding colony has re-established in Florida in recent years.
