The American Pipit is a slender, ground-walking songbird that bobs its tail continuously and walks with a quick, steady pace. It breeds on arctic tundra and alpine meadows, and in winter forms flocks on beaches, plowed fields, and short-grass areas. In flight it gives a thin, high-pitched 'pip-it' call for which it is named.
