The Little Pocket Mouse is one of the smallest North American heteromyids, weighing only 6–8 grams, with a long tail and tiny external cheek pouches. It inhabits sandy and gravelly desert habitats in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. The Preble's subspecies is federally listed as endangered due to urban development in coastal San Diego.
