Illustration of Red-billed Pigeon (Patagioenas flavirostris)

The Red-billed Pigeon is a large, dark pigeon of tropical riverside forests. In the US it barely reaches the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where it perches in tall trees along the river. The uniform dark maroon body and distinctive red bill are diagnostic. It has declined in Texas as riparian forests have been cleared.
