The Red-eyed Vireo is considered the most common songbird in eastern North American forests and may be the most persistent singer on the continent — one individual was recorded delivering over 22,000 song phrases in a single day. It sings its rapid, robotic phrases from the forest canopy almost continuously throughout the breeding season, even at midday when most other birds are silent. Its ruby-red eye is visible only at close range.
