The Killer Whale, or orca, is the apex predator of the ocean and the largest member of the dolphin family, with distinct ecotypes that differ in appearance, behavior, diet, and acoustics so profoundly that some researchers argue they represent separate species. Resident pods in the Pacific Northwest have complex social structures and distinct dialects passed culturally from generation to generation. Transient orcas specialize in hunting marine mammals including gray whales, sea lions, and harbor porpoises.
