Illustration of Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus)

The Walrus is unmistakable among Arctic mammals, bearing prominent ivory tusks used for hauling itself onto ice, establishing social dominance, and defending against polar bears. It detects clams and other benthic prey using its highly sensitive, whisker-like vibrissae to feel along the seafloor in murky Arctic waters. A single walrus can consume 77 pounds of clams in one feeding bout.
