Illustration of Vesper Rat (Nyctomys sumichrasti)

The Vesper Rat is a small, striking orange-and-white rodent of tropical forests in Mexico and Central America that is highly arboreal and builds round leaf nests in tree canopy. It has large eyes and ears suited to nocturnal canopy foraging and a prehensile-tendency tail for climbing. Despite its wide tropical range, it is rarely observed because of its strictly arboreal, nocturnal lifestyle.
