The American Shrew Mole is the smallest mole in North America and the only living member of the subfamily Neurotrichinae. Unlike other moles, it is partly aboveground, scrambling through dense leaf litter and mossy logs as well as through shallow soil. Its long, flexible tail and shrew-like proportions make it appear intermediate between moles and shrews.
