The Meadow Vole is one of the most abundant mammals in North America, with populations reaching up to 150 individuals per acre in peak years. It creates extensive runways through dense grass—networks of bare-earth paths just beneath the surface—that are readily visible after snowmelt. Population cycles of three to five years drive corresponding cycles in many predator populations including owls, foxes, and weasels.
