Illustration of Fraser's Dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei)

Fraser's Dolphin was described in 1956 based on a skull collected from Sarawak in 1895 but was not confirmed as a living species until mass strandings in the early 1970s. It forms large, tightly packed herds of hundreds to thousands in deep oceanic water and is occasionally seen well offshore of California and the Gulf Coast. Its bold lateral stripe distinguishes it from other open-ocean dolphins.
