The Variable Cracker is a fascinating tropical butterfly that produces an audible clicking or cracking sound during territorial interactions between males — an ability unique among North American butterflies. Its cryptically patterned gray-and-blue mottled wings provide excellent camouflage on tree bark. It occasionally enters extreme southern Texas.
