Illustration of Humboldt's Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys oregonensis)

Humboldt's Flying Squirrel was only formally separated from the northern flying squirrel as a distinct species in 2017 based on genetic evidence. It inhabits the humid, old-growth conifer forests of the Pacific Coast and reflects blue-white under UV light—a unique characteristic among North American mammals. Like its close relatives, it relies heavily on truffles for nutrition.
