Illustration of Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor)

The Tricolored Heron is a slender, active heron of coastal marshes with a distinctive white belly stripe contrasting with a dark blue-gray back and neck. It is the most energetic wading bird forager, chasing fish with dancing, pirouetting movements and spreading its wings to shade the water. The striking white stripe on the neck and belly gives it a tri-toned appearance.
