Illustration of Hedgehog Cactus (Echinocereus engelmannii)

Engelmann's Hedgehog Cactus grows in clumps of up to 60 spiny cylindrical stems, producing large, vivid purple-pink flowers in early spring that are among the showiest of any desert cactus. It is widespread across the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts, growing on rocky desert slopes and flats. The large, fleshy fruits are relished by many desert animals and were eaten by indigenous peoples. The dense, interlocking spines provide effective protection while the brilliant flowers attract specialist bees and cactus-feeding insects.

Habitat
Rocky desert slopes, flats, and washes of the Sonoran and Mojave Deserts in California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
Diet
Flowers visited by bees and cactus-specialist insects; red fruits consumed by coyotes, birds, and desert tortoises.
