The Common House Mosquito is the most widespread mosquito in North America and a major vector of West Nile virus, heartworm in dogs, and other pathogens. Only females blood-feed, using a needle-like proboscis, while males feed solely on plant sugars. Larvae develop in standing water, including birdbaths, gutters, and neglected containers.
