Baird's Sparrow is a sought-after prairie sparrow found only in native grasslands of the northern Great Plains. The distinctive ochre face with a dark patch below each side of the crown — sometimes described as an anchor pattern — is diagnostic. It is an indicator species for intact native grass prairie, disappearing quickly when grasslands are converted to cropland.
