The Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States, instantly recognized by the white head and tail of adults against a dark brown body. It is a powerful fisher that also pirates prey from Ospreys and feeds heavily on carrion in winter. Once endangered by DDT, populations have rebounded dramatically since the pesticide's ban in 1972.
