Illustration of Cacomistle (Bassariscus sumichrasti)

The Cacomistle is a forest-dwelling relative of the ringtail found in tropical and subtropical forests of Central America and southern Mexico. Its largely non-retractile claws and semi-prehensile tail enable it to move through forest canopy with remarkable agility. It is more frugivorous than the ringtail and plays a role in seed dispersal of tropical trees.
