The Nessus Sphinx is a medium-sized, day-flying hawk moth with rich chocolate-brown wings and two bright yellow bands across its abdomen that are visible in flight. It mimics a bumblebee or hornet while nectaring at flowers. It hovers like a hummingbird at flowers of phlox, thistles, and blueberries. Its rapid, humming flight makes it a distinctive sight in gardens.
