The Mantled Howler Monkey is the loudest land animal in the Western Hemisphere, with males producing resonant roars audible for up to three miles that serve to advertise territory between groups. Its enlarged, bony hyoid bone acts as a resonating chamber to amplify vocalizations. Howler monkeys are the most widespread primate in the Americas and are found from Mexico through Ecuador.
