American Elm was once among the most abundant and beloved shade trees in North America, lining streets and village greens with its graceful vase shape. Dutch elm disease, caused by an introduced fungus spread by bark beetles, has killed hundreds of millions of trees since the 1930s. Disease-resistant cultivars are slowly reintroducing the species to its former range.
