The Common Bottlenose Dolphin is the most widely recognized dolphin species in the world and a highly intelligent, socially complex mammal. Individuals form long-term alliances of males that cooperate to herd females, and some populations have developed tool use—carrying sponges on their rostrums to probe seafloor sediments. Bottlenose dolphins exhibit signature whistles—unique calls that function as names—for identifying individuals.
