Illustration of Winter Wren (Troglodytes hiemalis)

The Winter Wren is a tiny, mouse-like bird of dark, tangled forest understories, famously delivering one of the most complex and beautiful songs of any North American bird — a rapid, tinkling cascade of trills and warbles lasting 5–10 seconds. Despite its small size, it generates one of the highest-power songs per unit body weight of any bird. It often bobs up and down nervously on a perch.
