Illustration of Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus)

The Red Squirrel is an aggressive, vocal boreal squirrel that caches enormous middens of conifer cones—sometimes containing thousands of cones—to last through winter. It vigorously defends its territory against intruders with a chattering, scolding call that is a familiar sound in northern forests. Red squirrels are active year-round and can locate caches buried under several feet of snow.
