The Great Ash Sphinx is one of North America's largest hawk moths, with a wingspan reaching 4.5 inches and intricately patterned gray-and-white forewings resembling tree bark. It is strongly attracted to light and is one of the most frequently encountered large moths at porch lights across the eastern United States. The pale green or pinkish caterpillar can be found on ash, lilac, and privet in late summer.
