Illustration of Golden-crowned Kinglet (Regulus satrapa)

The Golden-crowned Kinglet is one of the smallest birds in North America, barely larger than a hummingbird, yet it overwinters in temperatures far below freezing across much of the continent. It must eat almost continuously during winter daylight hours to fuel its tiny body. The brilliant orange (male) or yellow (female) crown stripe is revealed when the bird raises its crest feathers in excitement.
