Bitter Cherry is a native shrub or small tree of western mountains and forest edges from British Columbia to California. Its white flowers appear in spring, and the bright red, intensely bitter cherries ripen in summer and are consumed by bears, cedar waxwings, and many other species despite their astringency. It provides excellent cover in montane shrub habitats.
