The Boreal Chickadee is a chickadee of the far north, inhabiting dense spruce-fir forests where its brown cap and rusty flanks distinguish it from the black-capped Black-capped Chickadee. Its call is a nasal, drawling 'chick-a-dee' that sounds distinctly hoarse. In cold winters it sometimes wanders south into the northern United States in small numbers.
