Pitch Pine is one of the most fire-adapted trees in eastern North America, capable of resprouting directly from the trunk after fire and regenerating from serotinous cones. It dominates the New Jersey Pine Barrens, one of the most ecologically unique regions in the eastern US. Its open, scrubby forests support a variety of rare plant and animal species.
