Switchgrass is one of the dominant grasses of the tallgrass prairie and a critical component of native grassland ecosystems from the Atlantic coast to the Rockies. Its airy, cloud-like seed heads turn bronze and russet in autumn. It is an important nesting grass for dickcissels and grassland sparrows, and its seeds feed many small birds and mammals.
