Nelson's Woodrat is a critically endangered endemic of a tiny area of Veracruz, Mexico, known from only a handful of localities in the volcanic mountains near Orizaba. It is one of Mexico's rarest mammals and has not been documented in modern surveys of its historical range. Deforestation and agricultural conversion of cloud forest have likely eliminated much of its habitat.
