Purple Needlegrass is the state grass of California and the dominant native perennial grass of Central Valley grasslands and foothill savannas. It once formed vast seas of grass across California's Central Valley before European settlement transformed most of this habitat. It provides critical seeds for many birds and small mammals and forage for deer and elk.
